While we would find Herod’s command barbaric and never do something like that, we still find some people who don’t want to give up control.
They hear the message, but ignore it, wanting to be king or queen of their own lives. They worship themselves instead of the one true King.
Some only accept Jesus at Christmas time, rejecting Him throughout the rest of the year.
I’ve often wondered, did the innkeeper go out and meet baby Jesus. He was right there.
Sometimes, like the innkeeper, we can be so close…but yet so far away. We hear the message, and yet miss the meaning.
When we focus on the parties and the gatherings, the songs and the decorations, we lose our focus on Jesus and the real meaning of Christmas.
Throughout this story of Jesus’ birth, we see many different people get the message. Some were rich like the wise men. Some were poor, like the shepherds. Some were young like Mary and some were old like Anna and Simeon.
The message is meant for everyone.
We’ve all been given a message to both hear and to tell – but what will we do with that message?
