As I sit here thinking about how the year has gone it can be quite depressing, especially around the holidays. I could think of the work Christmas party that was cancelled, or how gatherings with friends and family are almost non-existent. I could dwell on how shopping is different this year, and how it’s that much harder to find that perfect gift.
I never thought I’d miss standing in a two hour line for the kids to get an overpriced photo with Santa – yet here we are.
Sure, we’ve put up our decorations around the house. And we’re lucky enough to still be getting presents this year, but it doesn’t seem like Christmas.
Yet, if I think about it – that very first Christmas didn’t have any of those things either. There were no parties. No exchanging brightly wrapped presents around a decorated tree. And Santa wouldn’t enter the picture for hundreds of years.
So what if we look at what that very first Christmas was like. Maybe then we can see that Christmas is not supposed to be about traditions and things, but about the message of our Savior.
