The thing you need to know about shepherds is that they were not looked highly upon by society. Often they were uneducated or young – especially those working late at night. They had to stay out when it was cold and dark, watching out for thieves and predators alike. And, since they lived with animals in the semi-wild, they probably smelled.
These are not who you would normally announce the birth of a king to, let alone the Son of God.
Yet they were about to get a birth announcement like none other.
It was probably cold and dark, as they watched over their flock that night. They huddled around a fire for warmth. They traded stories trying to stay awake. They had no idea of what was to happen.
All of a sudden, the night turned to day. An angel appeared to them, hovering in the sky over them.
The shepherds trembled in fear. What other worldly thing could this be?
“Don’t be afraid!” the angel commanded.
“I bring you good news that will cause great joy for everyone. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. You will find Him wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
All of a sudden the sky was filled with angels. Everyone that had been in that meeting was there. They were all singing and praising God. “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace.”
Then, as quickly as it started, they all left.
The shepherds looked around at one another. And while no one might believe them, they, having heard the message, knew they had to go see the Messiah for themselves.
